Granadilla de Abona is a municipality in southern Tenerife. It is connected to the island’s capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, via the TF-1 highway and the old Santa Cruz de Tenerife–Adeje road. Neighboring towns include La Orotava to the north, Arico to the east, San Miguel de Abona to the southwest, and Vilaflor to the west.
The municipality covers an area of 162.43 km² at an average elevation of 500 m above sea level.
The town of Granadilla de Abona is bustling with activity. Countless restaurants, bars, and small shops line the streets. The courthouse, city hall, and many historic buildings are located here. Like every town, it also has a central square. The square is situated near city hall, where many locals gather regularly. The beautiful old town invites tourists to linger. In the town square stands a small chapel, the “Ermita de San Antonio de Padua.” Today, visitors can still admire the well-preserved altarpieces and carvings in this small church.
Another historic building is the Franciscan monastery of San Luis Obispo, which also dates back to the 17th century. Unfortunately, the Franciscan monastery was completely destroyed by a fire in 1742. In the 19th century, the former monastery was rebuilt and served as the town hall. In 1963, the town hall collapsed. It was rebuilt by the government and is now a protected building.
