Candelaria is particularly famous for its most important landmark, the Basilica de Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria. It makes the village the most important pilgrimage destination of the Catholic Christians on the Canary Islands. In the Basilica the patron saint Virgen de la Candelaria is worshiped. The figure of the patron saint is said to have been discovered by two Guanches at the beach of Candelaria already about 100 years before the arrival of the Spanish on the Canary Islands. Unfortunately the original was lost during an exceptional flood in 1826 and was replaced a few years later by the present figure.

The historic place that has still many historic buildings is also symbolized by nine large statues of the former Guanche Kings, the Menceys, that are on the seaward side of the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias, where is also the sanctuary.
